Before I build a snow man and make some hot chocolate, I have a few things to get done in 2018! I don’t know about you, but as a full-time, working mom, I feel like my kids just started back to school and somehow it is already almost winter break! I am still struggling with balancing long hours and spending time with my precious kids, and I have fantasies of making healthy dinners… So before they are off on winter break and I am juggling my work/home balance even more, I have a few last goals for 2018, and maybe you have them too?
Blogging is really important to me. I have a few more to finish up before the end of the year, both for this one and for my main voiceover website. As a solopreneur, I have to write them myself, which is fine, but obviously the middle of a work day is not the ideal time, so I need to carve out time. The blogs are important to me because I want my clients to understand why I do what I do and what I am passionate about. I want people to know me, and I am happy to share. I like to work with people that I know, and I want to make it is easy as possible to approach me.
I’ll share something else. I’ve had a long time client who will provide neither a name nor a direct address nor a phone number! They send me work every single week and they have always paid, so it has never been a problem per se, but when I have a question or they need a pickup there are times it would be amazing to speak with a human being. I am sure they have their reasons, but I wish I could get to know these folks. I am sorry for whatever happened to them that made them become so secretive! I want to be the opposite of this, I want to partner with my clients and really get to know them.
As a small business owner with a family to support, every penny makes a difference. I am spending the next few weeks reading some new books and trying to come up with some exciting new marketing strategies for 2019. I have done a lot of social media outreach in 2017-2018 that just has not hit the right audience, so it is time to reevaluate and get creative. A lot of my business is repeat business, so I also will begin to incentives referrals. That will be great.
Spring Cleaning in December
In addition to my broadcast-ready recording studio, I also have an actual office space. I have a desk and real filing cabinets. I have a system to keep currents scripts and files for regular repeat clients close at hand, but in truth both areas need tidying up. I need to be super organized so that I can work, and right now the clutter is creeping up. The days go by so quickly, but this will help a lot.
Holiday Mailing and Gifts
I wonder how many of you enjoy the holidays as much as I do? I do two huge mailings every winter, a family one and a work one. It takes a lot to orchestrate this and I take a lot of pride in the beautiful holiday cards I send out. I also send out some presents to my extra-special clients who have helped me meet substantial goals. It means so much to me to have their business, and I want them to know how appreciative I am this time of year and always.
Voiceover bookings tend to be consistent for me month to month, but last December I did a tremendous amount of last minute holiday radio spots. It was a huge income boost and as I am not going away I hope to do the same this year! I want to be there for my clients whenever they need me, and since some people do travel this time of year, they should know I will be working hard in my studio!
I wish everyone all the best in 2019 and a happy and healthy New Year! I hope you meet your end of year goals too!
